Georgia has introduced a new entry requirement for foreign visitors: as of 1 January 2026, all tourists must hold valid health and accident insurance for their entire stay. This requirement is grounded in the Law of Georgia on Tourism.
Necessary Documentation
Tourists must be prepared to present an insurance policy in physical or electronic form, and the document must be available in Georgian or English. Policies issued by either Georgian or foreign insurers are acceptable if they meet the prescribed criteria. To be compliant, the policy should expressly include the following details:
- Parties to the insurance contract;
- Subject matter of the insurance;
- Covered territory (policy should include Georgia);
- Commencement and expiration dates of coverage;
- Insured risks;
- Insurance premium amount, place, and terms; and
- Insurance sum/limits (at least 30,000 GEL).
Who is exempt
A limited set of travelers is exempt from this requirement. Exemptions include holders of diplomatic and special visas. Holders of diplomatic, official, service, or special passports are exempt. Diplomatic missions, consular posts, and international organizations accredit employees (and their family members). These accredited employees qualify for exemptions. International treaties govern certain people’s entry. These people qualify for exemptions. Drivers engaged in international road freight and passenger transport are also exempt.
Why Georgia introduced this change
According to Georgian authorities, as reported by media and industry outlets, the policy is a visitor-protection measure. It clarifies financial responsibility for medical emergencies and aims to reduce the burden on Georgia’s healthcare system from uninsured cases. The reform aligns Georgia with common international tourism practices. It is part of a broader push to strengthen safety and predictability for travelers.
